Support

We are always delighted to receive offers of support and, since it combines both horticultural and railway activities, the opportunities for support are many and varied.

Support can be given in a variety of ways:

Financial: by making a donation.

In kind: by donating tools and materials or by offering practical or professional expertise.

Time: through participating in horticultural and railway activities.

Please contact the nursery for further details. You will be very welcome!

The nursery is very fortunate, and grateful, for the loyal support it receives from both private individuals and commercial organisations.

Grants

The nursery became a registered charity in 2012 and has since been fortunate in attracting grant funding from a range of organisations, including the City of York Council, Upper and Nether Poppleton Parish Councils, the Charity Lands and Unknown Donors Dole of Nether Poppleton, the York Medical Society, Poppleton Gardeners Guild, Co-op Community Fund and York Vikings Rotary. Projects funded have included accessibility, safety, toilets and washing facilities improvements, the museum/archive project, a portable defibrillator and the purchase of furniture, horticultural tools and other equipment. Howdens gifted our kitchen and have also made improvements to our craft display space.

We welcome suggestions for future grant applications although our lease, which has to be renewed every three years, prevents us from seeking Heritage Lottery etc funding. See our Projects Page for examples of the type of projects for which we would welcome funding contributions.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is also very welcome (eg a local business supported advertisements for nursery open days) and we are very grateful for support from the Co-op Community Fund which is helping us to deliver improved plant protection.

Wills & Legacies

Income from sales covers many of the direct costs incurred by running the nursery but is insufficient to fund the restoration of the historically significant buildings or the construction of new facilities. Thus, a gift in your Will is a way of making a tangible contribution to the heritage and future of the nursery. For example, a recent legacy has helped to fund a new multi-use building which will enhance considerably the range of activities on offer to charitable organisations in the York area.

A gift in your Will could reduce the Inheritance Tax payable by your heirs as donations of money or property to registered charities, such as Poppleton Community Railway Nursery, are excluded from the valuation of your estate.

Please help us to secure the future of the nursery’s all-inclusive and vibrant community.
