Support

The nursery combines both horticultural and railway activities and welcomes support in either of these areas.

Support can be given in a variety of ways:

Financial: by making a donation or by becoming a member.

In kind: by donating tools and materials or by offering practical or professional expertise.

Time: through participating in horticultural, practical and railway activities.

The nursery provides a great venue for a day's team building, either by working in the open air or in one of its buildings.

Please contact the nursery for further details.  You will be very welcome!

The nursery is very fortunate, and grateful, for the loyal support it receives from both private individuals, charities and commercial organisations.  Network Rail, Northern Rail, Siemens and many other groups and individuals have regularly done a considerable amount of really valuable work over the last few years

Grants

The nursery became a registered charity in 2012 and has since been fortunate in attracting grant funding from a range of organisations, including the City of York Council, Upper and Nether Poppleton Parish Councils, the Charity Lands and Unknown Donors Dole of Nether Poppleton, the York Medical Society, Poppleton Gardeners Guild, Co-op Community Fund, York Vikings Rotary and the Two Ridings Community Fund.   Projects funded have included accessibility, safety, toilets and washing facilities improvements, the museum/archive project, a portable defibrillator, upgraded lighting and the purchase of furniture, horticultural tools and other equipment. Howdens gifted our kitchen and have also made improvements to our craft display space.

We welcome suggestions for future grant applications although our lease, which has to be renewed every three years, prevents us from seeking Heritage Lottery etc funding. See our Projects Page for examples of the type of projects for which we would welcome funding contributions.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is also very welcome - a local business supported advertisements for nursery open days - and local media are including regular reports about the nursery.  Please get in touch if your organisation would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities.

Wills & Legacies

Income from sales covers many of the direct costs incurred by running the nursery but is insufficient to fund the restoration of the historically significant buildings or the construction of new facilities. Thus, a gift in your Will is a way of making a tangible contribution to the heritage and future of the nursery. For example, a recent legacy has helped to fund a new multi-use building which will provide an enlarged, and more welcoming, meeting space for nursery open days and community events.

A gift in your Will could also reduce the Inheritance Tax payable by your heirs as donations of money or property to registered charities, such as Poppleton Community Railway Nursery, are excluded from the valuation of your estate.

Please help us to secure the future of the nursery’s all-inclusive and vibrant community.
